Daecheong Dam is located in between Daedeok-gu of Daejeon and Cheomgwon-gun of Chungbuk. It was named Daecheong, taking Dae (ÓÞ) from Daejeon and Cheong (ôè) from Cheongwon.
The lake is 72.8km2 in area, 80km in length, and 1.5 billion tons in capacity; the dam is 495m in length and 72m in height. Construction was started in 1975 as one of four river mouth development projects and was completed in 1980. This dam supplies drinking water, city water, and industrial water to Daejeon, Cheongju, and all areas midstream and downstream of the Geumgang River. Daecheong Lake is an artificial lake that used Daecheong Dam to trap the tributaries of Geumgang River; it is the third largest lake in Korea. It has the capacity to contain 1.59 billion tons of water and effectively reduces the risk of flooding near the Geumgang River. It also supplies agricultural water through irrigation in the Cheongju District, the lower Geumgang River District, and the Mangyeong District. It supplies electricity, city water, and industrial water to most regions in Chungcheong-do including Daejeon, Cheongju, and Gongju. It is a precious source of life for the central Korean Peninsula.
Daecheongho Lake is hallowed by the sorrow and nostalgia of the people who had to leave their hometown due to the construction of Daecheong Dam. We shall remember that our convenience and benefits have been made possible by their sacrifices.
Daecheongho Lake has a uniquely beautiful landscape that is considered one of
Cheongnamdae, a presidential vacation house, is located at the back of Daecheongho Lake. Daecheongho Lake was introduced to the public not very long ago in spite of its unbeatable landscape because of the security issues of Cheongnamdae. Today, many people visit Daecheongho Lake on their visits to Expo Science Park, Yuseong Hot Spring, Mt. Gyeryongsan National Park, and the many other natural attractions nearby.
Humans are not the only living beings that visit Daecheongho Lake for its beautiful landscapes and clear nature. Daecheong Dam is also a great home for migratory birds. In certain seasons, countless migratory birds come to Daecheong Dam for a respite. In summer, we can easily see white cranes fly low to catch food near Daecheong Dam water gate or upper Geumgang River. In 1997, Chinese merganser, a duck that was found in Cheorwon in 1993, was observed here. It shows that Daecheongho Lake is still clean and clear.
