Munchungsa Temple
Munchungsa Temple

This ancestral shrine was built to revere the memory of Song Byeong-seon(1836-1905) and his brother Song Byeong-sun (1839-1912) who died while fighting against Japanese occupation of Korea.

With the conclusion of Eulsajoyak(an unfair treaty signed between Korea and Japan under forceful pressure from Japan) in 1905, Korea handed over its powers to engage in foreign affairs to Japan. Upon hearing the news, Song Byeong-seon killed himself after adamantly claiming the execution of five government officials who supported Eulsajoyak and Japan's scheme to occupy Korea. His brother Song Byeong-sun also killed himself later when the country finally lost all its governing powers to Japan.

This shrine was originally built at Yeong-dong, Chungcheongbuk-do in 1908 before it was moved to its current location near the two brothers' hometown in 1966.
